Martin plays the recorder

It is very important to me that each of my children learn how to read music. I know that they probably won't become musicians, but I at least want them to know how to read music.
I gave Martin the option of learning the piano along with Aaron or learning the recorder. He chose the recorder. So, I am teaching him how to play the recorder. My plan is to use the recorder as a tool to teach him the language of music. I do have plans to move him on to a different instrument in a year or so. I am not sure which instrument ... I am far more comfortable teaching a woodwind than a brass ... but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I will post a video of Martin soon playing his recorder.

  1. This brings back memories of my education classes at Meredith. I had to learn to play the recorder and still have it somewhere downstairs. I bet he is already better than me! Your boys are so lucky to have a Mom who can teach them all this musical stuff!

  2. I had to learn how to play the recorder when I was in the 4th grade! I was so excited! We had a concert and everything! That was the only time I got to sit on stage very close to other people SHARING a music stand. From then I chose the paino where I had a bench to myself, I did not have to share, and I could turn the page when I was ready! lol

  3. And what a perfect teacher they have. All those years of teaching other children and now you are teaching your own!

It is also my goal to teach my children to read music, then they can go from there. Since I only know the piano, that is what I can teach them.
