Our Trip to Hawks Family Farm

Last weekend we finally made the trip up to Warrenton, NC to The Hawks Family Farm to buy beef. Not just any beef, though!! We found a wonderful source for pasture-fed/grass-fed beef. We have been wanting to find a good local source for a long time, so that we could get away from purchasing meat from grocery stores. The picture above shows the sign outside there farm.
This picture is of the building where they store the meat.

This is our cooler loaded with beef. We purchased 50lbs of ground beef, 4 lbs stew meat, 9 pounds of roasts.
They have very reasonable prices - in fact - much cheaper than even the sale prices at the grocery store. For 63 pounds of beef and a dozen and a half free range eggs, we only paid $158!! Our chest freezer is stocked full!
The beef is vacuum packed and frozen, and will last up to 2 years in our freezer. (It won't last nearly that long in our house of 3 growing boys!)
I packed a lunch for the children, so they could eat while we were traveling.
Jonathan fell asleep.

Rosalie slept all the way there - and woke up for a snack!

I highly recommend the Hawks Family Farm if you are in the market for good quality pasture fed beef.

  1. We've been in the market! Question: we've had some beef (our inlaws only eat grass fed beef) and it was VERY dry and not appealing at all...How is the juciyness of this beef?

Also, say you just want ground beef (we don't really eat steak or anything else, but go through ground beef like nobody's business, lol) I saw the GREAT price on their ground beef/lb! You don't have to buy a package do you - if we just want to go get 20lbs of ground beef, we can, right?

I'm sure I'll have a thousand other questions! We've been wanting good beef for a long time, but get turned off by $5+/lb!

    Thanks!

  2. The beef is excellent quality. We used the stew beef this week - and it was tender and juicy. We have not made a roast yet - but they look fantastic. You do not have to buy the package. You can go up there and purchase their beef just as you would at a grocery store. You can buy as little as 1 pound of ground beef.
The ground beef is not dry at all. IT's an excellent quality of ground beef. And even better, I know that the cows have never had antibiotics or hormones - and are healthy cows out in the pasture - eating what they should be eating - grass! I think that he may grain feed the cows some before they go to slaughter - but I am okay with that. It's just such a relief to have a source of beef that I know is out to pasture most of the time. Mr. Hawk and his wife do all the work - and the pasture is about 600 acres.
We are making it a point to only buy our beef from them from now on - and I wanted to post this blog - so that others could know about this great source! We are very happy with the meat!

  3. That's great Larissa!!

We've been buying our beef at the same farm we get our raw milk. It's great to 'know' where our food is coming from and know what it ate!

Off topic..... did you get a different car? Just asking because the pictures look just like the inside of our car. We have a sienna and the last I knew you had a windstar?
